Bethesda Purple Line Station, Maryland 2027
Cherry Blossom is a site-specific public artwork by Atelier Manferdini for the Bethesda Station of Maryland's Purple Line, commissioned through the Maryland Transit Administration's Art-in-Transit program. As one of twenty-one unique station commissions, the project establishes a distinctive visual identity while transforming the everyday experience of transit through color, movement, and nature.
Inspired by Bethesda's iconic cherry blossoms, Bloom creates a dynamic effect in which the blossoms appear to open and close as passengers move along the platform or trains pass through the station. The artwork celebrates the region's celebrated spring landscape, translating the ephemeral beauty of the blossoms into a contemporary architectural composition of layered graphics and vibrant color.
Integrated into the station architecture, Cherry Blossom turns a moment of transit into one of reflection and discovery, connecting the movement of commuters with the seasonal rhythms and cultural identity of Bethesda.
